Few pianists can claim to have had as much of an influence on style of jazz piano than Jamal. The arrangements of his songs with their big chord voicings, spacing and dynamics give his trio the sound of a small orchestra. As a matter of fact, Jamal considers his trio to be a small orchestra. His style of arranging also lends a dramatic and emotional tenor to his songs. He can also take the songs of other composers and transform them into his own. A good example of this is his arrangement of Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Wave" from his CD The Awakening. Jamal takes this song's simple melody and adds his own touch of brilliance with his dynamics and emotion pouring through.
A native of Pittsburgh, Jamal showed his brilliance early on at the tender age of 3 when he first started playing the piano in his parent's living room. He would continue his studies on the piano until the age of 17 when he started touring as a member of the George Hudson Orchestra. In 1951, after his last group The Four Strings broke up for lack of work, Jamal would embark upon his solo career.
This would be when jazz listeners would take notice of Jamal's unique style. Legendary trumpet player Miles Davis called Ahmad Jamal one of his favorite piano players. Davis credits Jamal with influencing the way he wrote arrangements for the piano in his own songs.
Jamal's style would win him many accolades through the years. He has been the recipient of many of numerous jazz and community awards. Some of his compositions have been featured in films. His versions of "Music, Music, Music" and "Poinciana" appeared the film "The Bridges of Madison County" which starred Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep. These songs are also featured on his album But Not For Me.
Jamal is always seeking to improve himself. His advice for people is to "be joyous in your work". It is easy to see that Jamal is a man of his word because one only needs to hear and feel the joy which he infuses into his playing.
Despite his 76 years, he keeps up a busy recording and touring schedule. His latest CD is About Fajr released by the French label Dreyfuss Records. Ahmad Jamal is currently on a tour which makes its way to the Regattabar located at The Charles Hotel in Cambridge from April 12th through 15th.
