Say the word "banjo" and most people think only of country music, The Eagles' "Take It Easy", and the film Deliverance. But once those people are exposed to Béla Fleck, they will never again think of the banjo in such limited terms. Since the 1970s, Fleck has been redefining how the banjo fits into the world of music-and a quick look at his resume gives one an immediate idea of how successful this redefinition has been: he has appeared on over 40 albums; he has played live with acts ranging from jazz giants Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, and McCoy Tyner to rock stalwarts The Grateful Dead and The Dave Mathews Band; he has won nine Grammys, including for jazz, classical, country, and pop. There is no concert experience quite like seeing and hearing Béla Fleck and the Flecktones, a band which has played live as many as 200 times per year since its 1988 inception. These concerts feature Fleck's virtuoso banjo-playing joined with bass, harmonica, saxophone, and drumitar (an array of electronic drum sounds triggered by a portable keyboard-an instrument invented specifically for use in the Flecktones). The result is a heretofore unheard-of hybrid of new age, jazz, funk, bluegrass, and folk (along with even an occasional classical piece) delivered via a seamless mixture of acoustic and electric instrumentation. The world has taken notice, as Béla Fleck and the Flecktones have graced the stages of Saturday Night Live, Late Night with Conan O'Brian, The Late Show with David Letterman, and PBS's Austin City Limits.

When Béla Fleck and the Flecktones give a concert, there is no opening act. This is partially because of the complicated electronics of their set-up, but mostly Béla says it's just that "we like to play for a long time, [and] we have no need for the concert to be any longer [than that]." To be sure, Béla and the band always deliver a full night of music. Their extensive touring schedule will take them out of the country beginning in March, but they will returning to the United States beginning with a May 30 show at the Botanic Gardens in Atlanta, GA.
