Black Tie Dynasty

Worth play, you're instantly transported back to the days when Saturday mornings found you with smudges of eyeliner on your face as you cobbled together the perfect mix-tape for that girl with all the Robert Smith pictures hanging in her locker. Black Tie Dynasty evokes the spirit of the best "new wave" bands of the '80s and there are hints of The Cure, Depeche Mode, Echo and the Bunnymen, and The Smiths in their music, but Black Tie Dynasty's sound never verges on imitation. Their driving guitars and subtle keys allow them to create songs that are brighter and more energetic than many of their influences and predecessors.

Made up of Cory Watson (vocals, guitar), Eddie Thomas (drums), Blake McWhorter (bass), and Brian McCorquodale (keys, vocals), Black Tie Dynasty has managed to come out of the Dallas/Ft. Worth area sounding nothing like any other band hailing from the Metroplex. Once home to such pioneers as Bedhead and Wiring Prank, Deep Ellum now mainly plays host to bands emulating whatever movement is popular at the moment. Thankfully, Black Tie Dynasty has shied away from that path, choosing instead to evolve within their own style and sensibility, creating pop that's not necessarily destined for the pop charts but that has the chance to hold up over time. That's not to say they don't have broad appeal, though. Their music is heralded by critics (they've received several DOMA awards and their album This Stays Between Us garnered a FWWMA Best Album nomination) and adored by fans.

As their popularity has grown, Black Tie Dynasty has managed to bridge the gap between Gen X and Gen Y. Those who grew up wearing Morrissey sideburns and drifting off to sleep to the sounds of Joy Division find a connection with the band, but young indie rockers who spend their days with Arcade Fire and TV on the Radio echoing from their iPods have embraced Black Tie Dynasty, as well.

The fervor of fans who are fond of saying things like "Thank you for single-handedly restoring my faith in modern music" largely stems from the joy the band brings to their sound. This is never more evident than when you see them live. Whether entertaining international crowds at SXSW or playing to clubs filled with DFW loyalists, Black Tie Dynasty manages to run a spark through the shoe-gazers, causing them to raise their heads and maybe, just maybe, even move their feet.
