Chanticleer is a vocal ensemble comprised of 12 all-male singers. Ranging from countertenor to bass, the group performs with purpose. Chanticleer, the fulltime classical vocal ensemble, was named after the "clear singing rooster" from Canterbury Tales. In 1978, the group was founded by Louis Botto in San Francisco . Motivation to form Chanticleer came to Botto when he was a graduate student of musicology; he found that much of the Renaissance and medieval music he studied was not being performed. Now, the group performs to rave reviews. In 2000, Chanticleer won a Grammy Award, under the musical direction of Joseph Jennings. Presented annually, a Grammy recognizes outstanding achievements in the record industry. Louis didn't live to see the Grammy; he lived from 1951 until his untimely death in 1997.

Celebrating the life of Botto, Chanticleer's schedule includes a 26-concert Bay Area season. In addition to the Bay Area performances, the group harmonizes their way across the United States with appearances at Walt Disney Concert Hall (under the auspices of the Los Angeles Philharmonic), Library of Congress in Washington D.C. , and the cathedrals of St. Louis and Philadelphia . Masterfully, they intonate at New York 's Metropolitan Museum of Art and Vassar College .
